Cocoa has been grown in southern Bahia since the late 17th century. A large portion of the Atlantic rainforest extends here. By the end of the 19th century, Brazil had become the world's largest producer of cocoa.

A past very present.
The mix of glorious history and healthy nature is what makes the charm of Costa do Cacau. The old novels of the famous writer Jorge Amado play out here. There are also still historical attractions like Bataclan or Bar Vesuvio in Ilhéus, where you can indulge and sin like the infamous cocoa barons from the early 20th century. Likewise, you should not miss the even more famous cathedral, São Sebastião, whether you want to confess or just visit and be amazed.
